Neurontin (Gabapentin) was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1994 for use as an anti-seizure drug. In 2002, the FDA also approved the drug for use in the treatment of shingles, a condition that causes a great deal of neuropathic pain. Other types of neuropathic pain have been shown to improve with the use of Neurontin. Fibromyalgia sufferers report good pain relief when using the medication and doctors are able to prescribe it more liberally due to its status as a non-narcotic pain reliever.
Before taking Neurontin, patients should tell their doctor if they have any kidney, liver, or heart disease. It’s also important to provide your doctor with a list of medications you’re currently taking, as Neurontin can interact with some medications.
